A New Hope? Disney Buys Lucasfilm For $4 Billion

The Walt Disney Company has reportedly bought Lucasfilm, the production company that brought us Star Wars and Indiana Jones, for $4.05 billion in cash and stock. The companies simultaneously announced that Star Wars Episode 7 will be released in 2015.

Kathleen Kenedy, co-chairman of Lucasfilm, will become president, reporting to Alan Horn, chairman of Walt Disney Studios. She will also become the brand manager for Star Wars, which has new episodes going into production. And under the new management, there?s reason to believe that these might actually be good.

The deal also includes Lucasfilm's multimedia and gaming divisions. As the owner of Pixar, Disney already exerts a powerful influence over the intersection between tech and entertainment, and it further blurs the line by bringing in Lucasfilm.

This acquisition follows Disney?s acquisitions of Pixar and Marvel, both of which have thrived under the banner of the iconic entertainment empire. Disney and Lucasfilm have worked together in the past on Star Wars and Indiana Jones-themed attractions at Walt Disney theme parks around the world.

?It?s now time for me to pass Star Wars on to a new generation of filmmakers,? said George Lucas, director of the timeless series and founder of Lucasfilm. ?I?m confident that with Lucasfilm under the leadership of Kathleen Kennedy, and having a new home within the Disney organization, Star Wars will certainly live on and flourish for many generations to come.?

Kats Nakasuga To Replace Ben Spies At Valencia

Katsuyuki Nakasuga is to replace Ben Spies in the factory Yamaha team for the final race of the season at Valencia. Spies, who had to undergo surgery on the shoulder he damaged in the race crash in Sepang, has been ruled out of the rest of the season. The race at Phillip Island had come at too short notice for Yamaha to find a substitute for the injured Spies, but the Valencia race allowed them to secure the services of Nakasuga.

The choice of Nakasuga is a safe and very conservative one, but it was always the most probable outcome. Nakasuga is Yamaha's MotoGP test rider, and would have been on hand in Valencia anyway. Nakasuga made an appearance at Motegi this year, where he finished a creditable 9th. Fans had been lobbying for either AMA champion Josh Hayes or former BSB champion Tommy Hill to take the ride. Hayes, in particular, had proven his worth with an impressive outing as a replacement for Colin Edwards at Tech 3 in Valencia last year.

Opinion: Sandy Reminds Us Of The Need For FEMA And That Romney Would Shut It Down

A neighborhood destroyed by Hurricane Sandy (Photo by Spencer Platt/Getty Images)Romney was asked at a presidential debate whether FEMA should be shut down in light of the deficit. Romney replied that FEMA should "absolutely" be shut down. He was asked specifically if that included disaster relief. He replied that it was "immoral" to provide such relief in the face of "larger debts", emphasizing that "it makes no sense at all" to have such programs.

Superfast 4G launches in Bristol

A NEW era for mobile phone use will begin today as superfast 4G products and services are made available to millions of consumers in 10 cities across the UK.
EE, formerly known as Everything Everywhere, will launch its range of 4G products and services in Bristol, London Birmingham, Cardiff, Leeds, Sheffield, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Liverpool and Manchester.
The 4G network, which offers speeds up to five times faster than 3G, will be available on the Apple iPhone 5 as well as devices from HTC, Samsung, Nokia and Huawei.
The launch comes amid criticism of EE's 4G pricing plans, which will hit customers on certain tariffs with additional charges if they exceed download allowances.
Long queues are expected at shops across the country as keen consumers rush to sign up to the new service and get their hands on a 4G device.
EE customers in a further six cities – Belfast, Derby, Hull, Newcastle, Nottingham and Southampton – will have access to 4G by the end of the year.
The group then plans to roll out the service to further towns, cities and rural areas next year.

In Egypt, post-revolution chaos stinks, with trash piling up

Garbage heaps have become a never-ending problem in poor and rich neighborhoods.

CAIRO — Trucks haul garbage away, but by nightfall trash bags seem to breed across boulevards and alleys, rising like a foul tide until men and boys, hands quick as birds, scavenge for tin foil flashing in the rising sun.
