Great-grandad counts on support from pals

A GREAT-grandfather used an appearance on television quiz show Countdown to raise money for charity.

Terry Moore, 73, from Whitehall, appeared as a contestant on the popular Channel 4 programme in January.

He got friends and family to pledge money to Alzheimer's disease charity Brace based on how many points he could rack up on the show, which is filmed in Manchester.

Mr Moore, who works part-time doing the wages for a contract cleaning firm, sought sponsorship from regulars at his local pub the Wackum Inn and also encouraged his friends and family to support him.

He said he was delighted to raise £1,100 for the cause, which he chose to support because his mother Florence Dorothy Wright died from Alzheimer's disease.

Of his Countdown experience, Mr Moore, who is married to Gloria, said: "I came second, shall we say, and came ten points behind the guy who won it.

"We both agreed after the show that we had a lousy selection of letters. I got 57 points, which isn't an unreasonable score.

"I got an eight-letter word 'accosted' which was the only one in the game. There were no nines and very few sevens on it.

"I've been on Fifteen to One years ago and that was a hair-raising experience.

"This was more relaxed."
