More than 200 people charged thanks to Crimestoppers' tip-offs

MORE than 200 people were arrested and charged with offences thanks to calls to Crimestoppers in the greater Bristol area in a year.

Statistics released by the crime-fighting charity have revealed 211 men, women and children were caught by Avon and Somerset police between April 1, 2011, and March 31, 2012.

That figure is two per cent higher than the previous financial year.

In all, 2,231 "actionable calls" – ones that were useful to the authorities – were made anonymously by the general public.

In April 2011/12 there were a number of campaigns run in the area, such as Help Us Stop Drugs Destroying Your Community and Don't let Rural Crime ruin Your way of Life, to which Crimestoppers received a "positive response" and resulted in a number of people being brought to justice.

Gordon Chisholm, pictured, the West Country development officer for Crimestoppers, said: "I am absolutely delighted by the results in Avon and Somerset and this is a positive sign of the work our volunteers are conducting in the area. These results are part of Crimestoppers' ongoing work to keep our communities safe and ensure that those committing crime are brought to justice.

"I would also like to thank the Avon and Somerset police for their hard work in dealing with the information we have passed onto them, which was given to the Crimestoppers charity by members of the community."

The charity celebrates its 25th anniversary next year.

Since it was founded in 1988, it has received more than a million actionable calls, resulting in more than 113,000 arrests and charges.

More than £123 million worth of goods has been recovered and over £232 million worth of drugs has been seized.

In 2011/12, across the UK, information passed onto the police by Crimestoppers increased by almost five per cent.

To report a crime, call Crimestoppers, seven days a week, on 0800 555111, or visit the website at www.crimestoppers-uk.org.

Anonymity is assured. People interested in becoming volunteers can fill out a form at www.crimestoppers-uk.org/volunteer.
