NO GP anywhere would refuse to treat or help a fellow human being in need. But virtually every doctor's surgery has more requests to be taken onto its register than there are places.
GPs therefore sometimes have to turn people down.
And whilst every effort is made to help asylum seekers it would surely be unfair and inappropriate for doctors to take them onto their lists ahead of people born in this country.
But that does not mean that an asylum seeker or anyone else would go untreated.
It means only that they may not be registered at a particular doctor's surgery.
If they need help, regardless of their status, this is a country where they will receive it.
For we are and hopefully always will be a compassionate nation.
The lawyers involved in this row have not helped this situation by threatening doctors with legal action.
They are creating a storm where none needs to exist.
Of course we should offer help to asylum seekers but a GP's surgery does not have unlimited capacity. The simple truth is that choices have to be made. But as MP Chris Skidmore points out lawyers should not be trying to dictate to the NHS.
