Mixing it up in cocktails contest

RUM flowed thick and fast during a cocktail competition in the city centre between two sister bars.

Staff from the bar Hyde and Co on Berkeley Crescent took on their colleagues from The Milk Thistle on Colston Avenue, showing off their flair and creativity for bartending.

For an hour and a half 40 guests enjoyed rum-based cocktails mixed by staff from The Milk Thistle on the bar's ground floor, before moving up a level for another 90 minutes of cocktail shaking by the bartenders from Hyde and Co.

At the end of the evening they voted on their favourite experience – won by the team from The Milk Thistle.

Matt Fairhurst, manager of The Milk Thistle – a speakeasy, closed door type of bar – said his team had put on a theatrical show with a voodoo element, in which cocktail barman Michael Sharp dressed as a voodoo shaman, drinks were set alight and cocktails were poured out of a coffin to the tune of a funeral march.

Hyde and Co served rum cocktails in cut crystal glass and a medicine bottle pumped full of smoke. Drinkers eventually chose The Milk Thistle as the winner.

The two bars have some of the best cocktail barmen in the country. Matt Fairhurst and Rich Tring from The Milk Thistle are finalists in World Class, the most prestigious bartending competition in the world.
